Frijoles Canyon at Bandelier National Monument will be closed to vehicles for one day on Wednesday for a paving project in the visitor center parking area. The paving project is part of the ongoing rehabilitation of the Visitor Center.
Visitors will not be able to drive into Frijoles Canyon and all visitor services also will be closed.
Trails at the Monument will be open to those wishing to day hike; however, overnight hiking permits will not be issued that day.
“For visitor safety, we decided it would be better to close Frijoles Canyon for one day and complete the paving all at once, and avoid potential dangers of visitors navigating through heavy equipment,” said Superintendent Jason Lott. “Other areas of the Monument will remain open, and visitors are welcome to explore trails such as the Tyuonyi Overlook trail, which leads to a beautiful view of Frijoles Canyon and Tyuonyi Pueblo.”
During the one-day closure, National Park Service staff will be available at Bandelier’s main entrance and at the amphitheater parking area to answer questions and to help visitors find other sites to visit.
Frijoles Canyon will reopen at 7 a.m. Thursday.
