Building a support system is an important part of building a healthy family.
For newcomers that means making new friends, which can be hard to do in a new town.
Carrie and Matt Stone moved to Los Alamos from Juneau, Ak, in November.
Carrie has a 6-year-old son and an 8-month-old daughter.
She began coming to the Thursday support group at Family Strengths Network for mothers of infants as soon as she heard about it.
“Our Realtor told us about Family Strengths, and I’ve met several other newcomers here,” she said.
Pam and Andrew Smith moved here from Melborne, Fla., last fall.
The couple has twin girls who are 5 years old and a 7-year-old daughter.
Pam learned about the twins support group and met other parents of twins.
She soon brought her next door neighbor who is also a newcomer with young children and is coping with cancer.
Pam introduced her to the FSN Resource Library, which has books on dealing with cancer as a mother of young children.
“I’ve made a lot of friends at FSN being new in town,” Pam said. “And I love the resources – the toy library, and the book library and the support.”
Becky Close moved to town in October of 2009 from Salt Lake City, Utah.
She attends once a week, including the Toddler Crafts program and the Toddler Tunes program.
“My kids love just playing there and choosing ‘new’ toys from the toy-lending library,” she said.
Becky added she heard about FSN through other friends that were new to town.
“It’s a great place to meet other stay-at-home moms.”
