The big grand opening for a full-line sporting goods store in town was set for Feb. 1, but a series of events related to the poor economy stalled movement on those plans.
LA Sports is finally set to open its doors in early August in the old Ed’s Market building at 1183 Diamond Drive.
The 1,000 foot facility is conveniently located across the street from Los Alamos High School. It’s situated in a suite on the north side and towards the rear of the building.
LA Sports will offer everything from official sports uniforms tand equipment to engraved awards and trophies. The store also intends to carry swimming equipment as well as hiking clothes and gear.
“I love this business,” owner Toby Trujillo said. “It’s still exciting after all these years because it always changes season to season and it’s a challenge to stay ahead of the game.”
Trujillo has owned Toby’s Sports in Española for 30 years and said he’s wanted to expand into Los Alamos for a while because this community is filled with so many active people, he said.
“We intend to serve the community with professional and friendly service,” Trujillo said.
Marvin Gabaldon has worked with Trujillo at Toby Sports for sometime and was tapped to manage the new store.
He and Trujillo discussed the fact that they had noticed Los Alamos hadn’t had a sporting goods store for some 10 years since the Sports Bag closed down.
“We felt it was a good idea to bring in a full-line sporting goods store because this community is very active and sports-minded and has more activities and more sporting events than Espanola,” Gabaldon said.
LA Sports will offer awards, engraving, medals and trophies, Trujillo said.
“We’ll also provide embroidering and screen printing on t-shirts and for team uniforms,” he said.
