New Mexico unveils its quarter

-A A +A
By Ralph Damiani

Well, the long, anticipated wait for the nation’s 47th state to reveal its quarter ended last week when – what was called Multicultural New Mexico – showcased its new  coin. And was it ever worth the wait. Here we have, after a contest, years of anticipation and hype a quarter with the outline of the state and the Zia symbol.Oh, you’re waiting for the other shoe?  There is not going to be one – that is it. Our coin is just the outline of the state and the Zia.Granted, it may be nice to be the first one to use a symbol created by American Indians,  but please. This is the best we could do?Let’s look at a few other states: Oklahoma has some creativity with some flowers and a bird. West Virginia has the Gorge Bridge. Kansas a buffalo. Florida has ships, the shuttle and a beach. Idaho’s got an eagle, Virginia some sailing ships, Vermont has trees and scenery. California some scenic shots, Montana cattle, Colorado mountains and Oregon a lake scene. How could we not do better? We have so much in this state, from American Indian to Spanish and more. Our wonders are second to few, with both manmade and natural displays. With all this, the best we could do is the state outline with the Zia.Oh, looking at some of the other coins we understand.
