New Mexico to receive $18.3 million to fight crime

-A A +A

*Los Alamos eligible for $24K

By Carol A. Clark

Some $11.1 million of the $18.3 million New Mexico is getting from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to fight crime is going to the state.

Of that funding, a little more than $5 million is available to communities throughout New Mexico on a competitive basis. The remainder will be allocated to the New Mexico Department of Public Safety to be distributed based on the state’s priorities.

Los Alamos County is eligible for $24,241.

“There is also stimulus money to hire more people but those grants will expire in three or four years and the county would have to begin paying those salaries,” Los Alamos Police Chief Wayne Torpy said. “But with approval from the county administrator we will apply for the $24,000. It’s not a whole lot of money but if it’s there we should take part and use it if there’s a need and with the new Judicial/Police/Jail Complex being built, equipment and other things will be needed.”

The $18.3 million targets a variety of anti-crime initiatives that would otherwise suffer because state and local funding is drying up due to the economic downturn.
