The school board unanimously elected Steve Girrens as president, Joan Ahlers vice president and Kenneth Johnson secretary at Tuesday's school board meeting held in the high school Speech Theater. The new officers shared their thoughts and plans for the coming year."We are making extreme progress in benchmarking ourselves with comparable school districts across the nation and charting our course for the next 20 years," said Girrens who most recently served as board vice president. "This progress includes advancing our educational programs, moving forward with our district leadership search and reaching closure on the Trinity Development Project."The president presides at all meetings of the school board and appoints all committees unless otherwise directed by the board, according to board bylaws. The president makes motions, discusses questions and votes thereon. He signs for the board and generally represents the board at all times when it is not convened. In this function, in the absence of official board action, the president may not make commitments, which bind the board. In the absence of the president, the vice president performs the duties and assumes the obligations of the president.Ahlers is the newest officer on the board, having just been elected a board member a year ago. She previously served on the Cimarron Municipal School Board.“I am very privileged to be able to serve our community and aide in maximizing the development of our future, the children of Los Alamos,” Ahlers said. “LAPS has many significant challenges that lie ahead in the coming year; finding new district leadership, initiating and funding a long overdue capital improvement plan, and maximizing our internal sources of revenue to protect LAPS out into the future. Anyone who knows me knows that I love a challenge, and I look forward to helping LAPS to conquer these (and any other) challenges in the coming year.”School board bylaws state that the president and board secretary sign all checks for the expenditure of funds included in the annual approved budget of the district. The board elected Johnson to a second term as their secretary on Tuesday. “In the coming year, I hope that we will be successful in the next bond election,” Johnson said. “It will be a major step in our goal of revitalizing our schools over the next 20 years. This is important for students, parents, school staff and the community. Lastly, I hope the county and schools continue to move forward with the Trinity Site development.”The board elects a president, vice president, and secretary from among its members each March during their regularly scheduled meeting. The term of office for each officer is one year beginning immediately upon their election and ending at the regular March meeting one year later after their successors have been duly elected. In the event one of the board members moves away or otherwise cannot fulfill their duties, the board is required to hold a special election within 30 days to fill the vacancy.School board members, according to the bylaws, have no individual authority. For information about the LAPS board, access www.laschools.net.
