Geraldine Keane was working at Pajarito Mountain Ski Area this winter when she was asked to take another position at the ski area, the food and beverage manager of Pajarito Mountain Café.

“I took it because I love food and beverages,” she said. “It’s a fun time.”

As result, Keane became the new food and beverage manager in January.

This wasn’t a new experience for Keane; she has been involved in the food and beverage industry in the past. Keane said she ran the restaurant and bar at the American Legion for 6 years.

She also worked in the UPEX store. Keane describes herself as a “busy, multi-worker.”

She added, “I love to cook.” Keane said she has had a lot of fun “throwing out recipes” and treating the ski employees as guinea pigs for her creations.

“And they’re honest,” Keane said. “They’ll tell me whether they like it or not.”

As the food and beverage manager, Keane said her duties include preparing the food and cooking, as well as following the rules and regulations of the state of New Mexico for cleanliness and food preparation.

She added she also oversees the lodge.

In addition, Keane is taking part in organizing different activities for the summer. One of these activities is Summer Fest, which will be held June 7. She also organized the end of the school year party for kids, which was held Thursday.

Through these activities, Keane said, she is “trying to promote the place a little more.”

It’s a task she said she is up to. “I’ve always been a people person (and) that helps in this business.”

In addition to her love of feeding people, Keane said she appreciates getting suggestions.

There are a few projects in the works for the ski hill’s restaurant. Keane, along with the ski club, is working to remodel the restaurant’s floor plan to have it offer a more “home style greeting,” and to be more efficient.

Looking toward the future, Keane said she would like to see the lodge offer more of its services for caterings, weddings and graduations.

Keane is a native Los Alamos resident. Her father is a retired police officer and her mother operates a private daycare.

Keane is the mother of three children and two stepchildren. “I’m a graduate from Los Alamos (and I) stayed in Los Alamos because of the security and the people … it’s a great environment to bring up your children in,” she said.

Her love of her hometown includes the ski hill. She said the ski area offers her everything that she likes from the scenery to the wildlife. And even though she doesn’t ski or snowboard, Keane said she loves the snow.

The restaurant is open from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday through Friday. During Bike Hike days, it is open from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Bike Hike days are posted on the Pajarito Ski Hill website, www.skipajarito.com.

She welcomes the community to visit the restaurant and the ski area. “It’s a great time up here,” Keane said.
