New environment Web site unveiled

The Conservation Voters New Mexico Education Fund unveiled Nov. 30 a new Web site, www.cvnmef.org/pledge, which tracks the responses of New Mexico state legislators to pledge to protect New Mexico’s environment.
It was sent out to 70 state representatives, representatives-elect and 42 state senators, asking them to agree to not weaken any existing environmental protections in the state.
So far the Web site reports only eight legislators have signed the pledge.“Having them (the legislators) go public that they will not roll back New Mexico environmental regulations is a good thing,” said Mark Jones of the Pajarito Chapter of the Sierra Club.
However, House Rep. Jeannette Wallace noted that legislators get notices similar to this pledge every day. Before pledging opposition to any potential bills that may appear, Wallace said she prefers to see a bill first before making any decision. There is a possibility a bill will get slanted, she said.
“Most of us who have been around in the legislature a very long time do not commit ourselves to something we haven’t seen,” Wallace said.
