He left high school at age 16 to join a surveying team in Alaska, and went on to join the Army Air Corp and then to attend the University of Washington. He received his Ph.D. in physics from UCLA in 1953 and worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1954 until 1992. He enjoyed years of flying his Cessna 180, endurance horse riding – completing the Pony Express ride in 1979 – riding his “tote goat” mountain motorcycle until 2007 and political discussions. He is survived by his wife Lucille; daughters Leslie Glass, and Kary Gilbert and her husband Ron, granddaughters Shannon Glass, Sarah Gilbert and Laura Gilbert; two brothers, George and Robert; and one sister, Flora May.
Cremation has taken place and per Neel’s request, no formal services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to Planned Parenthood or a charity of your choice.
