In his column on Wednesday, March 19, “Bad language should be punished,” Ned Cantwell says of the late William F. Buckley, “The guy talked pretty.” Since the word “pretty” is an adjective, not an adverb, it should NOT be used to modify the verb “talked.” Perhaps the sentence should have read something like “He spoke prettily.”This raises the question of how we should punish Ned Cant (do) well for his bad language.
