This is my ninth year teaching in a middle school. I have also spent a few years teaching at the university level.
Where did you go to college?
University of Kansas. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!
Which of your mid-school teachers was your favorite and why?
Ms. Lawrence. She taught social studies. She didn’t talk down to us and was willing to let us wrestle with big and controversial topics.
What is your favorite memory from working at school?
For me, there isn’t any one memory, just lots of little moments where things come together; that’s where I get the energy to keep going. Another thing I love is hearing from former students and finding out what they’ve been up to.
Are you married? Do you have kids? How many?
I’m married and have two sons and a very large dog.
What motivated you to become a teacher?
The first time I gave a guest lecture to a university class, I felt such a rush that I knew I wanted to be in the classroom. But it was 18 months in a non-teaching job that made me completely positive that I wouldn’t be happy if I wasn’t teaching.
