Dear Editor,The Albuquerque Journal (Dec. 7) gave considerable attention to the new film “The Golden Compass.” The movie is a sanitized version of the first book of British atheist Philip Pullman’s trilogy “This Dark Materials.”Pullman’s agenda is (in his own words) “to undermine the basis of Christian belief ee My books are about killing God ee I am all for the death of God,” etc.Pullman’s hatred of God and Christianity is already evident in the first book of the trilogy and gets progressively worse. The last book “The Amber Spyglass” is the most in-your-face assault on Christian sensibilities of the three volumes. Not surprisingly, his trilogy has been aptly called “Atheism for kids” by a British critic. As for the report of the Catholic bishops’ approval of the film, the bishops do not spend time reviewing films. However, had the individual(s) charged with reviewing movies been aware of Pullman’s agenda, the review would certainly have been qualified since the film is obviously bait for the books.Roland A.
