Rumors were running rampant this morning that Mountain Elementary School Principal Mike Katko has been asked to resign or be fired.
The source of the rumors is not yet clear.
The Los Alamos Board of Education met behind closed doors Tuesday in two executive sessions. Discussions of personnel matters was included on the agenda of both. The first session was held at 4 p.m. and the second at 5 p.m.
When asked this morning whether Katko had been asked to resign or be terminated, School Board Secretary Jody Benson replied, “It’s a personnel matter and I cannot comment.”
Katko spoke about the situation during a telephone interview this morning.
“I don’t want to discuss my particular case until I’ve had a chance to sit down with the superintendent,” Katko said.
Superintendent Mary McLeod said this morning that she is the person who makes final decisions on leadership positions such as school principals including who stays in their jobs and who the replacements will be. “I haven’t reviewed personnel evaluations yet and I usually don’t make these decisions until April,” McLeod said. “But we really can’t comment on personnel manners anyway.”
