ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — Tre’Von Willis scored 25 points and Quintrell Thomas and Oscar Bellfield combined for eight of UNLV’s 10 points in overtime in a 77-74 victory over New Mexico Wednesday.
Thomas finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds and Bellfield had 15 points for the Rebels (21-7, 9-5 Mountain West).
Dairese Gary had a career-high 26 points, and Drew Gordon added 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Lobos (17-11, 5-8), who lost their fourth straight.
UNLV missed six consecutive foul shots in the final 8 minutes of regulation but took advantage of a key miss by New Mexico late.
After Gary made just 1-of-2 free throws with 27.2 seconds to put the Lobos up 67-65, Bellfield scored on a layup that forced overtime.
UNLV took a 72-70 lead on Thomas’ putback with 2:55 remaining in OT and led the rest of the way.
The Rebels led 35-29 at halftime and pushed their advantage to 51-36 with 14:08 left in regulation before the Lobos got back in it with a 20-6 run. New Mexico then pulled ahead 66-65 — its first lead since 10-8 — on Gordon’s layup with a minute to play.
Willis, who has been battling knee problems of late, made his first seven shots and finished 9 of 13 from the field.
