ALBUQUERQUE — The University of New Mexico Lobos got 18 points from senior Dairese Gary and 15 from freshman Kendall Williams as UNM rolled the visiting Arizona State Sun Devils 76-62 Tuesday night in The Pit.
The Sun Devils ignored UNM’s rowdy Pit and cut through the UNM defense for a quick 10-3 lead. UNM then went on a 20-0 run to take a lead the Lobos would never let go.
The Sun Devils made several minor slashes into the UNM lead in the second half, but the Lobos always answered or even increased their lead. The win pushes UNM to 2-0 on the year.
ASU falls to 0-1 in the non-conference opener.
ASU’s Trent Lockett led all scorers with 22 points and led all rebounders with eight.
ASU won the board battle by two, 35-33. The Lobos took two more shots from the field than ASU and UNM hit on 26-of-56 for a 46.4 shooting percentage.
ASU went 22-of-54 for a 40.7 percent.
The Lobos beat ASU at the 3-point line by 12 points and by two points at the free-throw line.
The Lobos played 10 players and nine of them scored at least four points or pulled down at least five rebounds.
UNM also got a solid inside game from junior A.J. Hardeman with 12 points and five boards.
