Martin selected for award

Lana Martin, who teaches 6th grade at Barranca Mesa Elementary School was selected as the Los Alamos Public Schools 2012 Excellence for Student Achievement Award. The award is presented annually to a staff member, community member, parent, student, or community volunteer for promoting the enhancement of student achievement. The award winner is also credited with focusing on the local school boards efforts to improvement student achievement.
Martin has taught at Barranca for six years. Her students’ parents nominated her. They noted how impressed they were with their children’s achievement over time. They also spoke to her ability to improve the achievement of students, who were below proficiency.
Martin was also credited for being a good communicator. She spends extra hours tutoring students, runs a club called MATHCOUNTS and organizes an event called Math is Fun. She is also known for her ability to create a supportive classroom community while providing high quality lessons for her students.
Each school district in the state chooses a recipient through a nomination process.  Nominees for Los Alamos Public Schools also included teachers Kate Thomas and Peggy Sheridan and community members Kim Selvage and Dr. Schiferel. Martin will be advanced to the New Mexico School Boards Association for recognition at the state level.
