How is Jackie Marr’s appearance at the United States Long Course Nationals going?
Not bad, considering she set two United States records in one race.
Marr has set three new U.S. age group records in two events so far, including setting a new 400-meter freestyle record with her split in the 800-meter freestyle.
Marr, a Los Alamos master swimmer, has won both her events at Nationals, being held in Portland, Ore., including her 400 individual medley swim Friday morning.
In Friday’s race, Marr won the race by more than a minute and knocked more than 15 seconds off the previous best U.S. swim, a record that had stood since 1992. Marr had previously tied the national record.
She finished the 400 IM in 6:54.46 with seven of her splits being among the top eight posted in the race.
In Thursday’s 800 freestyle, Marr’s time of 11:55.93 was 28 seconds faster than the old U.S. record. Her 400 split of 5:54.70 was two-tenths of a second faster than the previous mark.
Swimmers can set new records with splits in individual events or in relay legs.
Marr’s next individual event is the 200 IM, possibly her most challenging race. That swim is scheduled for Saturday.
