Marguerite Elizabeth Doak Schreiber

SCHREIBER – Marguerite Elizabeth Doak Schreiber died peacefully in Santa Fe on Feb. 20, 2008, at age 97. Born in Walla Walla, Wash., she was raised in McMinnville, Ore., and graduated there with a degree in French from Linfield College. She married Raemer Edgar Schreiber in 1933. In 1943, Marge, as she was known to most of her friends, accompanied Raemer to Los Alamos, where he participated in the Manhattan Project. Marge endured living on the army base during the war, mastered cooking on the Black Beauty stove, relished the monthly trip to Santa Fe and dealt with the rigors imposed on families during that time. When Raemer opted to stay with the laboratory after the war, Marge was able to participate in forming the government and community of Los Alamos. Marge became one of the movers and shakers in the fledgling community. She was founder of the Girl Scouts in Los Alamos, founding member of the Garden Club, member of the early county council and member of the school board beginning when the schools were first being organized. She helped hire the first school superintendent and helped establish the charter for governance of the town. In 2007, she was recognized as a Living Treasure of Los Alamos. In the late 1940s, Marge and Raemer bought property in Pajarito Village in the Espaola valley where they spent weekends building an adobe home.
