Margaret (Peggy) R. Hemmendinger

HEMMENDINGER – Margaret (Peggy) R. Hemmendinger, 85, died following a stroke, on Dec. 10, 2007. Both she and her husband, Arthur, recently moved to Meadowlark Hills in Manhattan, KS, after living in New Mexico since 1945.Peggy was born Sept. 1, 1922, in Newark, N.J., daughter of Joseph Ross and Esther Klein Ross. She was predeceased by two brothers, Milton and Ira. After earning a degree in physics from Duke University in 1943, Peggy worked first at the Naval Ordinance Laboratory in Washington, D.C., where she met her future husband, Arthur, and then at Bell Laboratory in Summit, N.J.In 1945, immediately following their wedding in New Jersey, she learned to drive while en route with Arthur to the secret nuclear weapons laboratory and community of Los Alamos, N.M. Both of them fell in love with the mountain Southwest, and after raising their three children in Los Alamos, they relocated to nearby Santa Fe. During those years Peggy worked as a programmer for some of the largest early research computers.Peggy had a love for the arts. She sang in light opera and in the choral society while in Los Alamos. Later she actively supported the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, and she worked as a docent at the Santa Fe Opera. During those years Peggy served as the president of the State League of Women Voters, and she worked as a volunteer at the State Historical Museum.
