To get a great ski season, sometimes a higher power has to be appeased.

Saturday, during Ullrfest, which is named after the Norse god of skiing, participants will be working to ensure lots of snow appears on the Pajarito slopes.

Thad Hahn, volunteer organizer, described Ullrfest as a traditional beginning of the ski season party.

“You hope to have a good ski season ee with lots of white stuff,” he said. “It’s akin to doing a snow dance.”

The celebration begins at 9 a.m. with the Aspen chair lift operating for bikers and hikers. The lift will be open until 3 p.m.

The Nomads will take the stage from 1-5 p.m. and a beer garden will be open from noon-5 p.m.

As a result of the great response during Skifest, the Atomic City Transit will be offering free bus rides from Sullivan field from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

“It’s going to be great fun,” Hahn said, “(you can see) incredible views, enjoy a community activity and have a beer.”

The event is free, however, there will be a $5 fee to get into the beer garden.

Ullrfest not only kicks off the ski season but it also ushers in several other events. The ski swap will be held Oct. 18 and in the coming year, a new terrain park will be opening.
