The award is given out annually by Speaker of the House Ben Luján on behalf of the New Mexico Legislature through the New Mexico Public School Facilities Authority.

It is named in honor of Ben Luján for his many years of support of public education.

Representative Rick Miera, chair of the House Education Committee, served as master of ceremonies for this year’s award presentation.

“Every year the legislature allocates a significant amount of funding to public school construction and we need great maintenance to keep both new and existing facilities in the best possible condition,” Miera said.

“School maintenance personnel play a vital role in our schools and on behalf of Speaker Luján, it was my honor to recognize so many talented professionals.”

“We’re privileged to assist Speaker Luján in managing this maintenance awards program,” said PSFA Director Robert Gorrell.

“Maintenance matters — the quality of learning is improved by up to 20 percent through better facility conditions.”

The Public School Facilities Authority partners with districts to train facility maintenance professionals and to implement systems and processes that establish better public school facilities throughout New Mexico.
