Lunch with a Leader tackles environment issues

The League of Women Voters monthly Lunch with a Leader will be 11:40 a.m. Jan. 21 at the Mesa Public Library.
Speakers will be Don Machen and Philo Shelton representing the Environmental Sustainability Board.
All Lunch With a Leader events are open to the entire community.
Machen spent a significant portion of his professional life as an electrical engineer working in the scientifically fascinating particle accelerator world at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, also known as CERN in Switzerland, Daresbury in the UK and at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility. He and his family have lived in Los Alamos since 1967.
In 1982 he left Los Alamos National Laboratory to form a consulting engineering company in Los Alamos, from which he is now retired.
He served two terms on the Los Alamos County Planning and Zoning Commission and is currently serving his second term on the Los Alamos County Environmental Sustainability Board (ESB).
Shelton, public works director for Los Alamos County, is responsible for environmental services (waste collection and recycling), and all transportation for Los Alamos County that include, traffic and streets, fleet, transit, airport and engineering. 
He has worked for Los Alamos County since June 2012 and has been a public works director for the last 13 years. 
He most recently came from Steamboat Springs, Colo., and he originally from Fairfield, Conn.  He has bachelor of science and master of science degrees in civil engineering and he is currently working on a master’s degree in public administration.
His wife teaches at Barranca Elementary and their two children attend Los Alamos Public Schools.
Machen and Shelton will address the activities of the ESB and generally discuss the county’s environmental services activities.
