Los Alamos was well represented at the 2008 New Mexico Scholastic Chess Championships held last month. More than 175 players representing schools as well as independent players and chess clubs throughout the state participated in the three tournaments, kindergarten-12th grade, kindergarten-ninth grade and kindergarten-sixth grade. At the kindergarten through sixth-grade Chess Championship held at Manzano High School in Albuquerque March 15, Jeremy Goettee, a sixth-grader at Pion Elementary School, took home the first place trophy in the Novice section, and Henry Poston, a kindergarten student at Aspen Elementary garnered a first place trophy in the Midget section.“We’re extremely proud of the accomplishments of our chess players in this county, representing our chess clubs at the high school, middle school and elementary schools, as well as Canyoncito Montessori and the Home School Chess Club,” said Cary Skidmore, coordinator of the New Mexico kindergarten-ninth grade Chess Tournament held March 8 at Los Alamos High School.The Aspen Chess Club also received first- place team trophies in the Booster section at the kindergarten-12th grade and kindergarten-ninth grade tournaments.
