Los Alamos is among the communities throughout the world that are raising funds to provide relief to Haiti, which was devastated by an earthquake on Jan. 12.
A fundraiser for Haiti will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Best Western Hilltop House Hotel. There will be appetizers, live music, dancing, a silent auction and a cash bar. Tickets cost $25. All the proceeds will go toward the Partners in Health.
Several other organizations were considered to receive funds including the American Red Cross, the United Way, WorldVision, Doctors without Borders but none ranked as high as Partners in Health (PIH). Also, PIH has “in country experience” and is committed to the root causes of Haiti’s ranking as the poorest country in the western hemisphere, Hilltop House General Manager Denise Smith said.
PIH has more than 20 years of experience in Haiti healthcare-working with locals. The organization works to alleviate the “root causes” not just provide health care.
There is more than one way to support PIH. If individuals cannot attend the fundraiser, they are invited to donate items to the silent auction or donate directly to PIH.
“We encourage people to donate to a charity of their choice,” Smith said.
She added the support has already been strong. “The generosity of everyone has been amazing,” Smith said. Hopefully, the support will continue during the fundraiser “because the Haitians need it; they need our support,” Smith said.
