Lois Godfrey

Lois Godfrey was born in March 1928, in Cambridge, Mass., and died Nov. 26, 2007, in Boulder, Colo., after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. Lois attended the University of Michigan, and graduated from Simmons College, Boston, with a degree in library science. She married Tom Godfrey in 1950, and they moved to Los Alamos, N.M., in 1954, where their daughter was born in 1955. Lois worked at the LANL library until her retirement, and co-authored the Dictionary of Report Series Codes, two editions. She devoted her life to her family, and her spare time to volunteering with the League of Women Voters of Los Alamos, the Special Libraries Association and Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church. After retirement, she also volunteered at Sombrillo nursing home.Lois loved gardening, and shopping at the Farmers Market. She firmly believed in recycling, and was interested in sustainable living. She baked her own bread and repeatedly won ribbons for it at the county fair. Lois enjoyed elegant clothes, and was fortunate to live at a time when people dressed up to attend church, the theater, concerts and the opera, and to go out to dinner. She was known as a hostess of elegant cocktail parties and dinners for 12 with china, crystal, lace and candlelight.
