Plans are ramping up for a celebration of Los Alamos’ 60th Anniversary in 2009.Los Alamos County was created on June 10, 1949, by action of the state legislature. The first order of business for the committee formed to plan the celebration is to create a design to identify all of the anniversary events throughout the year’s celebration. Anticipated uses for the logo include miscellaneous printed material, including letterhead, use on an anniversary event website and replication on T-shirts, hats and tiles. The winner will receive a prize of $250 in Chamber Checks, which are redeemable at most Los Alamos County businesses. The five-member committee that will select the winning design will include a design professional, an elected official, a resident and two members of the 60th Anniversary planning committee. The judges will be looking at the overall effectiveness of the logo as well as the creativity, practicality and the aesthetics of the design.Artists and designers should look for a prospectus and call for entries, coming soon on the county’s website, www.lacnm.us.Christine Chandler and Lawry Mann are co-chairing the anniversary committee, and see their role as one of building community spirit. “We want to remind people why this is a special place, and why they want to continue to contribute to making this a better place,” Chandler said. She added that one area where Los Alamos is truly unique and stands out from other places is in the accomplishments of all of the volunteer groups, citing the Los Alamos Retirement Community, the Pajarito Ski Club, the Hospital Auxiliary and the Volunteer Task Force as only a few of the groups that have had a major impact here. The theme of ‘Reflections of the Past, Windows to the Future’ will frame all of the associated events during the year, from concerts to lectures. Rather than create all of the events from scratch, the committee hopes to tie its project in with existing events like the County Fair and Rodeo, the Los Alamos County Summer Concert Series and the Los Alamos Historical Society’s lecture series. At the committee meetings, ideas for celebrating the event fly fast and furious. The anniversary committee will be working with local schools to honor local educational leaders, with the faith community to remind people of the significance and history of the churches in town and with the service organizations.“We want to show our gratitude to the surrounding communities,” Chandler said. The committee meets once a month, and subcommittees meet according to need. If people would like to get involved in the planning, they can e-mail Chandler at cchandler@cybermesa.com, or call Mann at 662-4590.
