ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — Drew Gordon scored 12 of New Mexico’s first 18 points and Hugh Greenwood opened the second half with 14 straight points as the Lobos defeated Air Force 86-56 Wednesday.
Greenwood finished with a game- and career-high 22 points with six rebounds, and Gordon had 17 points and 11 rebounds for New Mexico (23-6, 9-4 Mountain West), which ended a two-game losing streak.
Taylor Broekhuis scored 11 points to lead Air Force (13-14, 3-10).
“I thought tonight, we did an awful of good things,” New Mexico coach Steve Alford said. “We shared the basketball. We didn’t turn the ball over. We dominated the glass. I thought our defense was really back to being that stingy defense we’ve been seeing.”
The game was close for the first few minutes before New Mexico reeled off a 19-6 run to go up 21-9, and the lead never fell below double digits thereafter.
“They were able to get the ball inside, score in the post, then once they went away from that, they were able to knock down some perimeter shots,” Falcons interim coach Dave Pilipovich said. “You can’t get behind to a very, very good team in this kind of environment.”
Greenwood hit four 3-pointers and a long jumper to start the second half as the Lobos stretched the lead to 54-29.
