The University of New Mexico Lobo men’s soccer team was tagged as the No. 5 team in the country heading into the 2014 season.

The Lobos, who advanced to the Final Four of the College Cup in 2013, picked up the No. 5 ranking from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. It was the highest preseason ranking for the Lobos since their No. 3 ranking in 2006.
Additionally, the Lobos were picked as the No. 1 team in Conference USA for the upcoming season in the conference’s coaches’ poll. UNM picked up seven of the nine votes to top that poll.
Last season, UNM went 14-6-2 overall and 7-1-1 in C-USA, its first season in that conference.
Charlotte, the winner of the 2013 conference tournament, and Alabama-Birmingham picked up the other two first-place votes in the coaches’ poll. Charlotte finished second in the poll and UAB was third.
On the preseason All-Conference team were a pair of Lobos, fullback Matthew Gibbons and midfielder Ben McKendry.
UNM opens its season Aug. 29 at home against Akron.
