In like a lion - White Rock buried under foot of snow

A surprisingly heavy storm dropped eight to 12 inches of snow on White Rock overnight.

"I live in White Rock and I had about a foot of snow at my house," Los Alamos Police Capt. Randy Foster said this morning. "We had a couple of minor accidents but fortunately county and state plow crews worked through the night clearing streets and roadways."

Meteorologist Scot Johnson of Los Alamos National Laboratory confirmed this morning that the storm measured between eight and 12 inches in White Rock. He explained that there isn't a snow measurement gage in White Rock but there is a precipitation gage.

"The liquid equivalent measured 77 hundredths of an inch at TA-54," Johnson said. "Multiply that by 15 and you have about a foot."

The liquid equivalent measured snow fall in Los Alamos totaled 26 hundredths of an inch at TA-6, he said.

"The official snow fall is 5.1 inches," Johnson said, explaining that when it first comes down it's light and fluffy before it finally settles.

The snow storm came directly from the east and Johnson said the forecast models predicted it quite correctly, "although White Rock was underestimated," he said.

"The storm hit mainly in the Rio Grande Valley between White Rock and Santa Fe," Johnson said.
