Letters of interest being accepted for probate judge

-A A +A

Letters must be received no later than 5 p.m. Oct. 16

By Special to the Monitor

On Tuesday evening, the County Council approved a process whereby citizens interested in being appointed to the currently vacant probate judge position can submit a letter of interest to the council.

Under state law, any qualified person who is over the age of 18 and a resident of the county may serve as probate judge.

Applicants are asked to submit a one or two page letter indicating why they would be interested in serving as probate judge.

The letter must be received no later than 5 p.m. Oct. 16. Interested applicants are asked to mail or hand deliver their letter to Los Alamos County Administrator Max Baker at 133 Central Park Square.

The council has placed discussion of this item and the letters received by the deadline on their Oct. 27 council meeting agenda.

Applicants must attend the Oct. 27 meeting and should be prepared to answer questions from the council regarding their letters of interest and qualifications.

The vacancy in the probate judge’s office was created on Sept. 27, when then-Probate Judge Janet Foster was selected by a majority vote of council to fill the vacant position of county clerk, a position formerly held by Mary Pat Kraemer.
