After reading the recent article in the Monitor regarding the Los Alamos Fire Department receiving another accreditation, I am embarrassed and ashamed of the Los Alamos County Council members, with the exception of Vincent Chiravalle, who at least recommended further review.
Remaining council members, you certainly are not representing me in your vote not to support the recommendations on the fact-finders report in consideration of fair wage compensation.
I wonder how many of you would go without an increase in salary for a number of years and not get frustrated at the decision-makers at your compensation as they throw money at projects that are overpriced and unnecessary.
I hope that you will take a little more time to consider the statement of Fire Chief Steve Olson of Geneva, Ill., who was the team leader of the LAFD assessment process: “The LAFD is well-staffed, very well equipped and a highly motivated group of people who are passionate about their jobs and they are the envy of every other fire chief of a similar size community. The residents of Los Alamos are very fortunate for the high level of support they receive from their fire department in emergency medical service and fire rescue response.”
I do feel very fortunate to have these firefighters, everyone from the chief to the newly graduated recruits, and I hope that you will consider that all of them should be compensated fairly and appropriately. These brave men and women have been there for members of this community, considerably more so than any bridge or trail renovation project that this council voted yes on.
