Let youth know they are valued

-A A +A
By Bernadette Lauritzen

Community values youth is our main focus this week, and for this one, I need your help.
Two local programs run by Assets are in need of a few volunteers or donations and I’d like you to give it some thought.
Cookies and Conversation is a monthly program we do at Los Alamos High School and would like to expand once again to Los Alamos Middle School.
My hope is that you are willing to donate time and/or cookies to the cause.
If you have some time, it takes about an hour, to an hour-and-a-half, and the only thing you need to do is talk. You don’t have to talk a lot and topics are usually pre-selected and pretty easy.
If you don’t have the time, but do have the resources, we usually feed the youth that is after all, what makes them come to the program.
Donations of store bought cookies would be great and can be dropped off at the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce. A pick up could be arranged, too.
The next area is SPARKS. We’re still looking for a number of adults willing to spend some time with students, talking about topic areas where they have some training or experience.
We will find a fit for the age range you’d like to speak to and can assist in coordinating a formal, classroom presentation or a casual booth display to showcase your talents or wares.
We’ve had requests for everything from quilting to martial arts and from robotics to photography. If you dabble in an area as a hobby or are trained in a topic as a professional, let us know if you would like to be a part of a SPARKS fair.
You can also find your own way to let youth in our community know that you value them.
You can patronize their business, request their help with a task or better yet, ask their opinion on a topic that matters.
As always, you can visit our Web site at www.
AssetsInAction.info to nominate a student for a Community Asset Award. A few minutes of time is all you need to provide some brief information telling us why they are so wonderful.
If you don’t have computer access, just give us a call at 661-4846. Feel free to nominate any student or adult who works to make this community a great place to live and work.
