L The kids are angry. They were led to believe they would be skating at the new park this summer. I can’t blame them for being upset, with things looking good for the park and then only to have the rug pulled out from under them at the 11th hour.A brand new site has been anointed by council. The Council voted to get a completely new proposal based on this new site before moving forward. In all likelihood this change of plans will cause major delays that will make it impossible to complete the project by this summer. The newly proposed site is on the south side of the community building in the grass and tree filled "Grove" area between the community building and the 20th and Trinity parking lot. This newly proposed location is not without it’s own problems. In the recent past, a Civic Center Theater proposal was shot down by Los Alamos County Voters in large part because it would have covered this Ashley Pond "Grove" area. The Grove is used by picnickers and is one of the few nicely shaded areas at Ashley Pond Park. The greenbelt around Ashley Pond needs to be protected. It’s a major part of what makes Ashley Pond special to us all.No matter where it is suggested we put the skate park, there will be loud complaints, that is the nature of the beast.
