The Los Alamos School of Gymnastics’ Atomic Tumblers will open their competitive season Sept. 10 and are hoping to start the 2011-12 year the way they closed out 2010-11.
The Atomic Tumblers will open at the two-day state clinic in Albuquerque. Following that clinic, the Tumblers will hold an intersquad meet Oct. 1.
LASG has 25 gymnasts on its roster for the season in five different levels.
Among its top returning performers are Level 4 state champion Elizabeth Lockhart and state runner-up at Level 4, Alyssa Hilger. Both Lockhart and Hilger graduated to Level 5 competition for the upcoming season.
Lockhart won three of the four disciplines at the state meet in March, picking up golds in the vault, balance beam and parallel bars, while Hilger won the floor exercise event and tied for second on the vault.
Hilger, for her part, scored a 9.575 on floor, the top score of any of LASG’s 16 competitors last season.
Many of the Tumblers’ top performers from last season moved up a level for the upcoming competitive year.
Jenna Weatherbie, LASG’s top finisher in the state meet’s Level 5 competition, will move on to Level 6 competition this season and top Level 6 finisher Luvina Lucero moves on to Level 7 competition.
Weatherbie won the floor exercise at Level 5 last year and was second in the vault. She finished fourth in state competition overall. Lucero was seventh at Level 6, while top Level 7 finisher Katya Skurikhin was eighth overall, winning gold in the vault.
