Saturday morning was an eventful one in many ways for the Los Alamos Hilltopper cross country teams.
The weather called a halt to the Hilltoppers’ originally scheduled meet, the West Mesa Invitational, something Hilltopper coaches Rob and Kathy Hipwood were informed of at 5 a.m.
But by about 5:40 a.m., Los Alamos found another meet to run in.
Los Alamos ended up competing at the Academy for Technology and the Classics, which was hosting its own meet Saturday and did quite well there despite the last-minute change of venue.
Both Hilltopper teams placed first at the meet, which included 11 other full girls teams and 16 other full boys teams. The Hilltopper girls finished with just 29 team points, 51 points better than runner-up Sandia Prep, while the Hilltopper boys earned 48 points, a little more than half the total of St. Michael’s in second place.
Individually, Colin Hemez was first overall in the boys race. Hemez, who finished a strong second in Los Alamos’ season opener a week earlier at the University of New Mexico meet, finished in 17 minutes, 36 seconds.
He was one of two Hilltoppers to crack the top 10, with Mike Walker finishing seventh overall.
