The Los Alamos Hilltopper softball team banged out 18 hits against the Moriarty Pintos in a road victory Tuesday.
Los Alamos scored 14 runs in the first three innings of its game at Moriarty, but the Pintos teed off as well late in the game.
However, the Hilltoppers, with another big inning in the fifth kept out in front and topped the Pintos 22-13. It was the first win of the season by the Hilltoppers over another Class 4A team.
Los Alamos came up with nine extra-base hits, three of them coming from Emilee Jones. Jones had a pair of doubles and a triple in the contest, driving in four runs.
Krysta Salazar had a double and a triple and scored three runs while driving in two more. Kiana Zerr and Shelby Chavez each scored four runs.
The Hilltoppers (2-4) won’t play again for a week. They will take on Pojoaque Valley next Tuesday in Jacona.
Moriarty (0-5), meanwhile, has gotten off to a rough start this season. The Pintos have given up 81 runs in their five games so far.
But the Pintos finished with 10 hits Tuesday and put up back-to-back 4-run innings in the fifth and sixth innings, but it was too little, too late as they trailed 15-4 going into the bottom of the fifth.
It wasn’t all good news for Los Alamos, though. The Hilltoppers committed four errors Tuesday, as many as they committed in four games at last weekend’s tournament in Farmington.
In the pitching circle, junior Jordan Hammock earned the win, throwing five innings, allowing five earned runs and striking out four.
Zerr, just four days removed from her basketball season, made her first pitching appearance of the season, throwing the fifth and sixth innings in relief. All the runs Zerr allowed were unearned.
