Los Alamos National Laboratory has earned an award as the top corporate volunteer organization among large employers in VolunteerMatch’s network of more than 140 leading companies and brands.
Debbi Wersonick of Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Community Programs Office, coordinator of volunteer programs at the Laboratory, traveled to Chicago to receive the Corporate Volunteer Program of the Year Award, given by the San Francisco-based nonprofit organization for outstanding achievement and results in program reach, connection rate, volunteer hours tracked per 1,000 employees, and volunteer impact.
The Laboratory ranked ahead of dozens of other qualifying companies with 10,000 or more employees. Other finalists among large employers included Google, UnitedHealth Group, Morgan Stanley, and three-time winner Exelon Corporation.
“Los Alamos National Laboratory is proud to receive this recognition from VolunteerMatch because it validates the importance we place on volunteerism and being involved in the communities where we live and work,” said Community Programs Office Director Kurt Steinhaus.
“Since LANL joined VolunteerMatch in 2007, Laboratory employees and retires have reported more than 700,000 hours of volunteer service. That is a record we are quite proud of, and I want to thank all the LANL volunteers who made this award happen.”
The Laboratory plans a volunteer recognition event June 22 at Fuller Lodge in downtown Los Alamos to recognize employee and retiree volunteers.
Los Alamos National Security, LLC will make monetary donations to eligible nonprofit organizations based on the volunteer efforts of Laboratory employees and retirees.
In 2010, nearly 1,300 LANL employees and retirees logged 250,245 hours of volunteer service, surpassing the 193,000 volunteer hours reported to VolunteerMatch in 2009.
VolunteerMatch provides systems and resources for employee volunteer programs. VolunteerMatch began recognizing large and small companies for their volunteer efforts five years ago to help raise awareness about the impact of corporate volunteering on eligible nonprofits.
