LALT saves the best for last

Like the tabloid weeklies that taunt celebrities with pictures of their cellulite or pimples, “The Importance of Being Earnest” pokes fun of the people who got all the attention during the Victorian era in England, the aristocracy, by revealing their silliness and superficiality.

A few hundred years later, the play has not gotten stale; the jokes are still as fresh and relevant as they were when the play was first performed in 1895.

It helps that the cast of the Los Alamos Little Theater’s production of Oscar Wilde’s play does such a wonderful job presenting this show. The entire cast never falters with their English accents or with delivering Wilde’s wordy lines. A real standout in the play is Corey New, who plays Algernon, a sneaky, troublemaker. New just slips so easily into this role – it seems like he and his character are a perfect fit.

Another standout is Jody Shepard at Lady Bracknell. Shepared’s Bracknell wears her fantastic, enormous blue and purple heats with authority, authority she uses to meddle in the relationships of others.

The costumes complete the package; from Algernon’s impressive smoking jacket to Gwendolen’s lavender and powder-blue ensembles, everyone is dressed to the hilt.
