Los Alamos High School musicians have a prestigious past and the honors continue during the annual All-State Music Conference and Clinic Jan.  6-8 at the University of New Mexico.

Tuba player Henry Stam will perform in the concert orchestra; trumpet player Alex Austell will perform in the symphonic band; euphonium player Eli Berg will play in the symphonic band; horn player Dov Shlacter will play in the symphonic band; clarinetist Shannon Burns will be in the symphonic band, flutist Julia Murphy will be in the concert band; and horn player Alan Dahl will perform in the concert band.

Participants were selected through live audition from more than 1,000 young musicians from around the state.

They auditioned on wind and percussion instruments.

Berg was selected as the first chair player in the symphonic band meaning he had the best overall audition in the state on euphonium. Stam was selected for the concert orchestra meaning he had the second best overall tuba audition in the state.

“I’m very proud of their individual efforts,” LAHS band director Zane Meek said.

He added it is not typical to  want to put forth the time and effort needed to take part in the conference and clinic.

All musicians will rehearse with the other participants from around the state and will get to work with internationally recognized conductors and clinicians over the three day event, culminating in a concert on the final day.

“They get to perform and met students around the state,” Meek said, “people who are just as dedicated to music as they are.”

He added, it’s “just a different experience for them to work with people who are really good at what they do.”
