Temperatures will rise at 8 p.m. Thursday after the LAHS volleyball game as the annual bonfire activities get underway at Sullivan Field.
Keanna Cohen and the Los Alamos Youth Leadership SPK team have met for weeks to get ready for the bonfire and hope community youth will turn out for the event.
“Homecoming week is the most extravagant week of the year and it’s important for students to feel included and support our football team,” Cohen said.
Adult leader Barbara Marcille, Kiwanis member Sharon Stover and Veronica Rodriguez of Los Alamos National Bank will help facilitate group activities.
They have had the addition of many community hands to make this event happen.
“Mike Thompson of the Los Alamos County Fire Department has been really helpful. He attended our last team meeting, and he is working with the kids and with his department to make sure this is both a safe and fun event,” Marcille said. “Tom Littleton from LAPS has been great about communicating with the SPK kids to make sure everything is in place. Both of them have helped with the bonfire before and are very supportive.”
Thursday around 6:45 p.m. students will sell spirit shirts for $7 while supplies last. Thanks to the Kiwanis Club of Los Alamos some chocolate surprises are in store for students this year.
“Each year we make it better, our relationships with our sponsors get stronger and we are able to add new activities,” Cohen said. “This year should be really great. Not only are we serving s’mores, but we’re having a special appearance of Los Alamos High School’s very own Davis Anson on guitar.”
“This is a great group of kids. They have lots of ideas and they are all taking responsibility,” Marcille said.
Cohen will further discuss the bonfire details at 7:30 a.m. Thursday on KRSN AM 1490. The Juvenile Justice Advisory Board through the YMCA sponsors the Los Alamos Youth Leadership.
