Jeremy Kasik and Margaret Wood received the highest student-athlete honor awarded by Los Alamos High School at Thursday night’s All-Sports Award Ceremony.
Kasik, a football and baseball player for Los Alamos, and Wood, a top cross country and track athlete, were named the 2008 Clendenen Award winners at Thursday’s ceremony, held at Duane W. Smith Auditorium.
The annual award is given to outstanding graduating student-athletes that excelled in both the classroom and the playing field. Athletes are nominated by head coaches of varsity sports at LAHS.
Nominees are also judged based on criteria such as community involvement and refraining from alcohol and tobacco use throughout their high school careers.
Also on Thursday, Wood’s cross country mentors Rob and Kathy Hipwood were named Head Coaches of the Year for LAHS.
The Hipwoods guided the girls cross country program to a third-place finish at the state Class AAAA meet last November.
The boys program, meanwhile, upset Albuquerque Academy for the AAAA state title, tied the same Academy Chargers’ squad at a national qualifying meet, then finished second at Nike Team Nationals in early December.
