Los Alamos National Laboratory announced that Isaac “Ike” Richardson would replace Jan Van Prooyen as deputy director, as of Feb. 1, 2009.

Van Prooyen, who has served as deputy director for three years, will retire in early 2009.

“I want to thank Jan for his commitment to the Laboratory, valuable insights, and leadership over the last three years,” said Laboratory Director Mike Anastasio. “At the same time, I welcome Ike and believe that his experience and skills will complement and enhance the strong leadership team that the Laboratory has in place.”

Richardson served 31 years in the U.S. Navy. He retired as rear admiral, having commanded the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and served in other positions of major responsibility in the Navy.

He provided oversight of storage and compliance programs for U.S. nuclear weapons assigned to NATO throughout Europe, according to the laboratory announcement.

Richardson comes to LANL from Bechtel, one of the two main partners that manage the laboratory contract. He joined Bechtel in 2003 after a brief tenure as federal security director of the Chicago’s O’Hare Airport.
