The Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team took one victory in five duals matches at the Moriarty Invitational Saturday.
Los Alamos, wrestling for the first time in nearly a month, got off to a slow start at the Moriarty dual meet, hosted by the Pintos, one of the top Class 4A teams in the state. However, Los Alamos regrouped quickly to pick up a win over Sandia in its second contest of the day.
The Hilltoppers topped Sandia’s Matadors by a final of 39-30. They would lose to Del Norte 31-18, Moriarty 60-18, Las Vegas Robertson 51-12 and Santa Fe 37-24.
“Overall, we had some good wrestling,” Los Alamos head coach Bob Geyer said. “Our first match against Del Norte, we came out real flat. After that, we had a talk, we regrouped. In the second match, everyone came out and boom, boom, boom.”
The Hilltoppers traveled with nine wrestlers Saturday, although Mitchell Carson competed only in exhibition contests. Three Hilltoppers, Alyc Montoya, Cory Geyer and Brian Geyer, combined to win 13 of 15 contests, with Brian Geyer going 5-0 on the day.
Coach Geyer said he was happy with the effort after struggling early, but giving up six weight classes against Moriarty, which boasts a full compliment, didn’t help that final result.
