The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team is hoping to finally host a game at home Friday after its first two scheduled home openers were nixed.
Los Alamos picked up its first victory of the season Saturday against La Cueva, taking a 4-3 victory, along with earning a forfeit win over Rio Rancho’s Cleveland High School.
Against La Cueva, the Hilltoppers got four goals from four different skaters to earn a 4-3 victory. Dustin Taylor, Tyler Thorn, Gabriel Intrator and Arnoldo Ortiz all picked up tallies for the Hilltoppers in their victory.
The previous night, Cleveland forfeited its contest, which was scheduled for Los Alamos County Ice Rink. The rink, which was still closed for what was supposed to be the Hilltoppers’ opener Nov. 18, was operational for Friday’s scheduled contest, but Cleveland elected not to drive up to Los Alamos due to weather concerns.
In the second half of a doubleheader Saturday, Los Alamos lost to Cleveland, 4-2 in Rio Rancho.
Los Alamos (2-3) is scheduled to face a very tough customer, Cibola, Friday night at the ice rink. Game time is set for 8:15 p.m.
Hilltopper head coach Joel Kress said he was much happier with his team’s offensive performance this weekend than in its previous outings.
“Our offense improved leaps and bounds compared to the single goal we managed to score last weekend,” Kress said. “We scored six goals today and could have scored six more if the puck would have just bounced our way.”
Against Cleveland Saturday, Hilltopper goaltender Bryce Templeton had to face 13 shots in the second period alone.
Templeton faced a total of 51 shots in Los Alamos’ two games over the weekend.
Los Alamos’ only contest this week will be against Cibola’s Cougars.
The Cougars head the New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League standings. They are undefeated and untied through 12 games.
Cibola also features the three most prolific scorers in the NMIIHL, including Graeme Chiasson and Zach Prigge, who have 37 and 36 points so far.
Prigge leads all skaters with 26 goals.
