The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team is starting off its District 2-4A season with a match against a solid team Wednesday.
Los Alamos will travel to Bernalillo to take on the Spartans Wednesday. Match time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
The Los Alamos-Bernalillo match will pit the District 2-4A teams with the two best records during the 2011 season. Bernalillo has been red hot during the nondistrict season, winning 9 of 10 heading into the district opener.
The Spartans, who have struggled in recent years to make much of a run in the 2-4A standings, have over the course of the last season-and-a-half put themselves in a position to be a potentially serious district contender.
Wednesday’s match, however, will be a litmus test for the Spartans, who didn’t play the toughest schedule during the nondistrict season. Included in the Spartans’ record are three victories over Socorro. Their best quality victory was a 3-1 win at St. Michael’s Sept. 2, while they’ve also beaten a district opponent, the Capital Jaguars, during the Pinto Classic earlier this month — victories over district opponents prior to the start of the district season don’t count in the standings.
Meanwhile, heading into the contest, the Hilltoppers (9-3) have won seven of their last eight matches. This season, they have lost to just two opponents, once to Class 5A Sandia and twice to Pojoaque, which with its win at Rio Rancho this weekend makes a good case for being the best volleyball team in the state regardless of classification.
Wednesday’s match will be the first for Los Alamos in a week. It picked up a five-set win over Moriarty in its most recent contest, a somewhat surprising score as Los Alamos swept Moriarty in the Pinto Classic.
Los Alamos won its third consecutive district title in 2010, earning both the regular season and 2-4A tournament crowns. Los Alamos swept the district competition last season, but its toughest match during that stretch was its 3-2 victory over Bernalillo.
In that match, Los Alamos needed a big night from outside hitter Sabrina Little, who finished with a career-high 29 spike kills, a total that is among the best ever posted in school history.
This season, in a five-set win over St. Michael’s, Hilltopper senior Chase Ealey finished with 32 spike kills.
Los Alamos is currently ranked No. 3 in the Class 4A coaches poll.
NOTE: KRSN AM 1490 is scheduled to broadcast Wednesday’s match live from Bernalillo.
