LA track has strong opener at Rio Rancho

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls track and field team picked up a big win and the Los Alamos boys track and field team earned a third-place finish at Saturday’s Chili Quad meet in Rio Rancho.
Los Alamos’ girls finished with 102 points to win its season opener, while Los Alamos’ boys finished with 54 points in the four-team meet. Host Rio Rancho picked up 101 points to earn the victory.
The Hilltopper girls grabbed seven event wins. Los Alamos’ boys earned wins in the javelin, 200 meters and 1600 meters.
Laura Wendelberger, who looked very good in the preseason for Los Alamos, won three events the 100-meter hurdles, the high jump and the long jump. Also, Chase Ealey, the reigning shot put 4A champ, qualified for state in that event, throwing 40 feet, 3 inches despite missing part of the preseason with an injury.
For Los Alamos’ boys, Sean Reardon took top honors in the 1600 meters, David Stroud won the 200 meters and Brady Stokes was the winner in the javelin.
