The Los Alamos Hilltopper C team football squad split its final two games of the regular season, topping Capital but falling to St. Pius X.
In its home finale Oct. 24, the Hilltoppers thumped Capital’s Jaguars 59-14. The following week, the Hilltoppers lost to St. Pius’ Sartans, 26-6.
Against Capital, Skylar Veenis and Sam Ortiz combined for a whopping seven touchdowns, with Veenis scoring four times. Alex Delamarter also scored in that contest.
In both the final two games, Los Alamos shuffled in as many players as it could.
“Sometimes it’s more important to make sure all the members end the season with the belief that, as they mature both mentally and physically, they can contribute to the program,” coach Marco Lucero said.
Lucero said he was proud of the team’s overall effort to close the season.
Many C team players spent time with the varsity, which concluded its season with a first round playoff loss last weekend.
“After working and continuing to work with these young men since June, I have no doubt that this program developed by coach (Garett) Williams will bring a long positive future for Los Alamos football,” Lucero said.
