The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team held on through a touch-and-go fifth set to top the Albuquerque Academy Chargers Thursday night at Griffith Gymnasium.
The Hilltoppers and Chargers battled back and forth, tying the score four times before the Hilltoppers finally pulled away.
Los Alamos won the key battle against a very good Class 4A squad, by a final of 24-26, 25-22, 25-18, 16-25, 15-12.
Academy (7-6) was ranked 10th in this week’s MaxPreps 4A poll, three spots ahead of Los Alamos, but Los Alamos jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the contest.
The Chargers battled back, however, and dominated set four before the tough final set.
Thursday night’s match was only the second home match of the season so far for the Hilltoppers (7-4), who won their other home match over St. Michael’s Sept. 11. The Hilltoppers won’t play at home again until Oct. 12.
Thursday’s win was the second in a row of a very key stretch for Los Alamos, which will have a huge contest Saturday at Santa Fe. Santa Fe (10-3, 0-1) lost its District 2-4A opener at home to Española Valley Wednesday and is in need of a victory to avoid getting into an early hole.
Meanwhile, Los Alamos has a golden opportunity to improve to 2-0 in district play ahead of a critical 2-4 contest next Wednesday at Española Valley.
