The Los Alamos Hilltopper ice hockey team is sitting in third place in the prep standings this week after dropping a pair of games to El Paso, Texas, Coronado.
Los Alamos (8-4-1) has 17 points on the season, third-best total in the current New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League standings. It trails Coronado’s T-Birds and Cibola.
The NMIIHL doesn’t have games scheduled for this weekend owing to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.
Coronado (13-1) is atop the standings, but actually trails Cibola (13-1-2) by two points overall. Coronado’s two wins over Los Alamos in week 11. Coronado topped Los Alamos 5-2 in one game and 7-2 in the other.
The Hilltoppers did beat the La Cueva Bears 3-2 during week 11.
Individually, Hilltopper goaltender Zealand Walterscheid is statistically the No. 4 backstop in the league. Walterscheid, who has appeared in all 13 of Los Alamos’ games to date, sports a 2.41 goals-against average – third-best in the NMIIHL – and has made 132 total saves.
Cibola continues to lead the league in scoring with 117 goals for. Zach Prigge (26 goals, 20 assists) leads four Cibola players in the top six among scorers this year.
Cibola and Coronado are also tied for top defenses, having given up just 31 goals so far. Los Alamos has allowed 37 goals on the year.
