The Los Alamos Hilltopper hockey team will host its arch-rival tonight in one of its final two home games of the 2011-12 season.
Los Alamos will face off against Taos tonight. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
The Hilltoppers will wrap up their regular season with four contests, including tonight’s game against the Ice Tigers, who have a longstanding rivalry with the Hilltoppers.
Also this weekend, Los Alamos will host the Albuquerque Outkast Friday night. That game marks Senior and Coaches Appreciation Night. Los Alamos will also play two games on Sunday morning, both of those at Outpost Ice Arena in Albuquerque.
The Hilltoppers will enter this weekend on a good note, winning two games and deadlocking in another last week. Los Alamos topped St. Pius X 3-1 and blanked Rio Rancho 2-1, then tied St. Pius 2-2.
Tyler Thorn had a big week for the Hilltoppers, scoring in all three games, including a two-goal performance in the win over Rio Rancho. Thorn also earned an assist in the victory over St. Pius.
Also for Los Alamos, freshman Hudson Davenhall had a goal in the first game against St. Pius and an assist in the second game. Goaltender Sam Ortiz earned both wins on the weekend, stopping 23 of the 24 shots he faced in those contests.
Despite the victories, Los Alamos still ranks near the bottom of the New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League standings. Los Alamos (6-11-2) can, however, move into a tie with Taos in team points with a win tonight.
Los Alamos defeated Taos in the teams’ most recent meeting, a 5-3 victory on the road. In that game, Davenhall earned a hat trick while goaltender Bryce Templeton stopped a whopping 40 shots to earn the win.
Taos has a dangerous scorer in Allen Palmer, currently ranked third among the league’s goal-scorers with 52 total points.
